Here’s How to Stay Safe from the Omicron Virus

The Omicron virus is a variant of the novel coronavirus that first emerged back in 2019. This variant was first detected in South Africa in November 2021. The Omicron virus has around 50 mutations and higher transmissibility than the delta variant. Common Omicron variant symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of smell and taste. Several countries have reported cases of the Omicron virus. In such a scenario, it is quite important to understand the precautions from Omicron virus that need to be taken. Here are a few tips on how you can stay safe and keep your loved ones protected from infection during the current wave.

  1. Wear a mask in public places

This is one of the best tips to follow for taking precautions from Omicron virus. Wearing a mask whenever you go out will help to reduce the emission of water droplets from your mouth and nose while you are talking, coughing, or sneezing. Teach young children how to properly wear a mask so that it adequately covers their nose and mouth.

  2. Wash and sanitize hands at regular intervals

Whether you are at home or in a public place, do wash your hands at regular intervals. You can either do this by using a sanitizer or a handwash. Washing your hands at regular intervals will help you stay safe from infection by ensuring you touch your face only with clean and sanitized hands.

  3. Get vaccinated

Getting yourself vaccinated does not necessarily mean that you are immune to the Omicron virus; rather, it helps you reduce the severity of the infection. COVID–19 vaccines create antibodies that help your body fight the Omicron virus if it enters your system. In fact, the government has also launched a booster shot that you can take after you have been fully vaccinated. The booster dose helps to increase the number of antibodies present in your immune system.

  4. Maintain social distancing

It is advisable to maintain at least one metre distance from other people in public places. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), social distancing helps in breaking the chain of transmission of the virus. You are also required to follow quarantine measures if you travel to other states and countries during the pandemic. While the government has shown staunch support for social distancing norms by reducing the number of people allowed in public gatherings, you can do your part too by avoiding hosting any parties or large get–togethers till the pandemic abates. This way, you can protect loved ones who are vulnerable, such as senior members of your family.

Life is quite unpredictable. While you may follow all the precautions from Omicron virus, you may still get infected. A health insurance policy can help cover you against expenses incurred for treatment if you get hospitalized. Make sure to buy coverage for yourself and your loved ones today as treatment costs can often drain out your entire savings. Take care, stay indoors, and stay safe.
