How Does FASTag Work: A Quick Guide on How Tolls Get Debited Electronically

FASTag is an electronic facility of collecting toll payments from motorists. This facility has truly simplified the process of paying toll tax and reduced long traffic jams at toll plazas. Now, you may wonder how FASTag works and how it benefits you. If that’s the case, read on to learn more about this wonderful tool.

FASTag: How it works?

Your FASTag is a sticker that is affixed to the windscreen of your vehicle. This sticker functions on Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID). When you pass the toll booth, a FASTag scanner scans the sticker affixed on the windscreen and automatically deducts the toll charges from the linked account. You can either:

  • Link FASTag to a savings account
  • Fill a prepaid account from where the money gets deducted
For this entire transaction to take place, your vehicle does not need to halt at the toll plaza. You can drive through as the transaction occurs seamlessly. This ease of the entire process will truly help reduce congestions on main roads and lower the intensity of traffic jams.
How to get FASTag?

FASTag has now been made compulsory for all vehicles classified as ‘M’ and ‘N’ categories. This category includes all four wheelers that are used for passenger commute or to transport goods.

You can get FASTag at any of the 22 banks that have been approved to sell the sticker. When you get your FASTag, the bank staff will be able to activate your account and show you how FASTag works technically. You can also opt to buy FASTag from an ecommerce website like Flipkart or Amazon or even pick up your FASTag sticker easily from a toll plaza.
Recharging your FASTag

Recharging your FASTag is super simple. You can easily use a debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI to fill the required amount into the FASTag account.

Things to keep in mind

Here are a few important things to keep in mind about FASTag:

  • Penalty for non-adherence

If you are still wondering whether you should get your car fitted with FASTag, remember that not having this sticker means you will have to pay double the toll that is normally charged.

  • Validity

Your FASTag is valid for a period of five years.

  • One sticker, one vehicle

A single FASTag account can only be linked with one vehicle and cannot be used to pay for another vehicle’s toll even if you are the owner of both vehicles.

FASTag is a much–needed boon in today’s times. Apart from helping reduce traffic jams at toll plazas, it also helps save on fuel due to reduced wait times. This, in turn, helps reduce pollution and is better for the environment. Plus, you receive an SMS or email each time a toll fee gets cut from your account. This helps you keep track of how much you have spent on tolls in a particular trip.
Apart from FASTag, remember to also have a valid driving license and motor insurance policy for your vehicle. Take care and drive safe.
